Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic  Surgery (HPB) & Liver Transplant

  • What is Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery?

Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery consists of surgical procedures to treat cancers and other disorders that affect the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreas. These are among the most challenging and most complicated surgeries performed in General Surgery, and they therefore require a high level of skills and expertise.

Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery require a multidisciplinary team of care to provide a treatment plan for each patient. The team includes Hepatobiliary Pancreatic and Transplant surgeons, medical oncologists, interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists and anaesthesiologists. Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery is performed using advanced endoscopic, laparoscopic and robotic procedures. Some common procedures include:

    • Surgical oncology such as Pancreaticoduodenectomy also known as the Whipple procedure (removal of the distal stomach)
    • Gastrointestinal Surgeries such as Laparoscopic Antireflux procedures
    • Pancreatic Surgeries such as robotic &Laparoscopic Distal Pancreatectomy & whipple’s procedure (removal of part of the pancreas)
    • Gallbladder and Bile Duct Surgery such as Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (single-incision) or reconstruction of bile duct strictures due to injury
    • Hepatobiliary Surgeries such as Liver Transplant and Liver Resection
  • Why do you need Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery?

Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery is recommended for the treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers as well as other diseases affecting these organs. Our experienced team of surgeons, interventional endoscopists, hepatologists and radiologists work in concert to deliver the best surgical treatment and achieve better clinical outcomes.

Surgery is used for the resection of primary and metastatic tumours of the liver, gallbladder, bile duct and pancreas. It is also used to treat benign diseases such as cysts, bile duct injuries and strictures (blockage), and Portal Hypertension. Some tumours affecting the liver, gallbladder and bile duct might require major resections, and might therefore require complex reconstruction of the bile duct, hepatic artery and portal vein.
